Welcome

to my piece of the web. On this page, I host some writings, some code and, in case you care, something about me.
This page was designed with lightweight code in mind, and although it uses state-of-the-art web standards, it should render nicely even in your old browser. If not, please let me know.

My WTF

For someone like me who works in the IT business, thedailywtf.com is pure joy. Now, here at the world’s leader in business applications, you only stumble upon the occasional WTF moment. Let me instead try to collect a sample of the myriads of WTF I experienced during a previous job at a hospital’s IT staff.

IT had to deal with three regular topics: employee help desk, hardware configuration and maintanance, and dealing with the hospital’s ERP system. If there was time left in between those areas, one was encouraged to participate in special projects, like driving development of the hosital’s content management system. Do you want to know more? »

Howto watch high quality Youtube videos

Apparently Youtube moves towards high quality streaming using the new Flash plugin’s H.264/AAC support. Most Youtube videos are already available in H.264 format, however this feature is not yet advertised.

Here is a Greasemonkey userscript that enables higher quality for most Youtube videos: http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/23535

Check out the difference: Screenshot quality difference .

Now if they’d only remove that annoying 10-minute-limit to videos.

Update: I took this down in the end because there are probably 200 similar scripts now and the userscripts page was only used by comment-spammers.

Audio Commentaries

Over the past couple of weeks I’ve been developing a new web application: audiocommentaries.net (Beta). This service provides video streaming of English commentaries to Starcraft games played in Korean programing.

This is a purely educational project for me. I do this to teach myself the latest web application technology. Specifically, I used JBoss Seam 2.0 as an application framework, JSF and Facelets for the presentation and H.264/AAC-HE encoded videos streamed be the latest Flash player 9 update. Quite a lot of buzzwords right there!

It’s been a lot of fun so far and I am satisfied with the results. I am a little behind schedule with this release, but that’s mostly due to the loss of an additional development resource. Right now the project is in public beta state. If and to what extend I will continue development depends on whether the service will be used by a significant number of people from the Starcraft progaming community.

The whole project is and will remain open source software licenced under the GNU GPL. Code and project documentation can be seen at the project’s management website.

Web Two-Oh

Funny thing, the interwebs. In Nov 2006 I put up this 1-hour hack: stalkerati.de. I posted a reference to it on the depth of some blog a week later or so and completely forgot about it.

10 months later someone must have found that reference and must have started linking to stalkerati.de . Because all of sudden I am receiving an unusual amount of feedback on the site. So I asked the oracle why that is: Do you want to know more? »
